Point Turton is a peaceful seaside town overlooking beautiful Hardwicke Bay.In years gone by it was a shipping port for the area’s barley crop and quarried flux. It was also used for the districts mail service. At low tide, just south of the jetty can be seen a “boiler” the only remains of the shipwrecked tug “Yulta” which ran aground in 1926 when coming into Point Turton. Originally this ship was known as the “James Comrie” (in the 1880’s), a mail steamer which serviced both sides of Yorke Peninsula. It was later converted to a tug and renamed the “Yulta”. Point Turton is becoming increasingly popular as a tourist destination as it offers so much for the visitor to do. The area around Hardwicke Bay offers mile upon mile of beautiful beaches and reefs for walking and exploring, shell collecting, swimming, diving or just for relaxing. While the sheltered bay is perfect for boating, fishing, windsurfing, sailing and jet skiing. Exploring the Southern part of the peninsula is a must for all visitors as the area abounds with numerous coastal scenic drives and no visit would be complete without a trip to the spectacular Innes National Park. |
